Grain may be part of the reason.

It can influence how quickly a putt rolls and how the ball reacts as it loses speed. The effect is more noticeable on some grass types and surfaces than others. It is also easy to overread. Plenty of missed putts blamed on grain were really caused by slope, pace, or a misread.

The useful question is not whether a green has any grain at all. It is whether the grain is visible enough to matter for the putt in front of you.

An uphill putt into the grain can make both effects more noticeable. The slope works against the ball while the grass adds resistance at the surface.

This does not mean every putt that stops short was misread because of grain. The stroke may not have started with enough pace, or the green may simply be slower than expected. Grain is one possible adjustment within the larger question of why putts are left short.

Look for a repeatable pattern before giving grain too much credit.

How Cross-Grain Can Change Break
